Damage Symptoms:
Leaf Curling and Yellowing: Aphids feeding on plant sap can cause leaves to curl, twist, or bend. Heavily infested leaves may turn yellow and eventually wilt.
Stunted Growth: Aphids weaken plants by extracting nutrients, leading to reduced vigour and slow growth.
Honeydew and Sooty Mold: Aphids secrete honeydew, a sugary substance that can become covered in sooty mould, a black fungal growth. This can reduce photosynthesis and further damage the plant.
Malformed Flowers and Fruits: Aphids feeding on flower buds and fruits can cause malformed or aborted blooms and fruit.
Ants: Honeydew attracts ants, which may protect aphids from natural enemies.
Target crops:
Aphids are a broad group of sap-sucking insects: They feed on various plants, including vegetables, fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants.
Common examples of aphids include: Black bean aphid, cotton aphid, green peach aphid, and woolly apple aphid.
Aphids can be found on different parts of the plant: Shoots, flower buds, and the undersides of leaves are common locations.
They can also infest roots: Some aphid species feed on roots, causing similar symptoms to foliar infestations.
